DANBURY, Iowa -- John C. Cord, 88, of Danbury died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. His death was the result of complications with Parkinson's Disease.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Danbury United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Barbara Joy and Kathy Olson officiating. There will be a United States flag presentation conducted by the American Legion Carlson-Frum Post 336 of Danbury. Private family graveside services will be held in Liston Township Cemetery, Danbury. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton, Iowa.

John Clifford Cord was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Danbury, to John "Cliff" and Ethel (Brown) Cord. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1935 and received a degree in agriculture economics from Iowa State College in 1939.

He worked for the Department of Commerce in Washington D.C. following his graduation. He later joined the Soil Conservation Service in North Dakota and Nebraska, where he worked as a farm planner.

He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II, stationed with the 30th Engineers in North Africa and the Hawaiian Islands.

On Dec. 3, 1944, he married Catherine Byers in Denison, Iowa. He returned to the family farm near Danbury in 1945, where he farmed for more than 40 years. Throughout his farming career, he was a strong advocate of land conservation practices.

He served as Woodbury County Soil Conservation commissioner and was a past treasurer of the Woodbury County Farm Bureau. He was a board member of the Maple Valley and Woodbury County schools. He and the Cord family demonstrated their belief in education and reading by offering their generous support to the library in Danbury named in their honor, The Cord Memorial Library. He was a local 4-H leader and a lifelong member of the Danbury United Methodist Church, where he served in various roles. He also was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine of Mapleton, Iowa; four children, John R. and his wife, Emily Embree of Lone Tree, Iowa, Bob and his wife, Pam of Atlantic, Iowa, Carol Patrick and her husband, Arlen of Ames, Iowa, and Mary Cameron and her husband, Tom of Danbury; seven grandchildren, John and William Cord, Daniel Patrick and his fiancee, Kate Vargas, Emily Patrick Krantz and her husband, Jeremy, Shawn Cameron and his wife, Teri, Adam Cameron and his fiancee, Lucy Edmonds and Travis Cameron; stepgrandchildren, Emily Leonard Melody and her husband, Marc, Erin Leonard Schechinger and her husband, Raen and Ember Leonard; three great-grandsons; and a sister-in-law, Ardis Cord.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; and two children, Mark and Kent.
