DAKOTA CITY -- Fern N. McLaughlin, 93, of rural Dakota City died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at a South Sioux City care center.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Nancy Leonard and the Rev. Dr. Robert Boehlke officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Fern was born March 29, 1912, in Canton, S.D., the daughter of George H. and Mary Jane (Richardson) Greer. She was raised and educated in South Dakota and received her teaching certificate from Augustana Academy in Canton. She taught in a rural school near Hermosa, S.D.

She met Earl C. "Bud" McLaughlin and they were married May 29, 1937, in Sturgis, S.D. The couple moved to Nebraska in 1940, where they farmed and raised cattle until their retirement in 1982. She was on call at Evergreen Nursing Home in Dakota City for eight years.

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was an assistant 4-H leader and was active in church work. She enjoyed music and played both the piano and violin. She wrote several books about her family and her life, the last book being published in January 2006.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Jewell and John R. "Bob" Hood of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Joy and her husband, Ronald R. Flaugh Jr., Troy Hood, Stephanie and her husband, Jeffrey Kalbfleisch, Stacy Meier and Michaleen McLaughlin; six great-grandchildren, Autumn and Easton Flaugh, Koby Hood, Erin and Emma Kalbfleisch and Marshall Meier; a sister and her husband, Mary and the Rev. Dr. Robert Boehlke; and a brother and his wife, Wayne and Nelloise Greer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, "Bud" on Aug. 25, 1986 in Sioux City; a son, Dwight on Jan. 13, 1988; her parents; four sisters, Lelia, Lucille, Marie and Georgia; and two brothers, Austin and Verne Greer.
