Helen H. Vanderwal, 74, of Sioux City died Monday, March 9, 1998 at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin Boes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Vanderwal was born March 22, 1923 in Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of August and Minnie (Karstens) Herbst.

She married Wallace N. Vanderwal on November 1, 1941, in Dakota City. He died October 4, 1985 in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Charlotte and LeRoy Moffitt, Barbara and Thomas Utech and Kelly and Gerald Dickes, all of Sioux City, Cheryl and Clayton Nath of Omaha and Beverly and Butch Cederburg of Golden, Colorado, three brothers, Donald Herbst and his wife, Blanca of Puerto, Rico, Raymond Herbst of Merrill and Edward Herbst and his wife, Nellie of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Darlene and Vern Sorenson of Tucson, Ariz., 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Herbst and a sister Phyletta Mathey.
