Helen I. Abelson, 83, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at a local nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Riverside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janice Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a 7 p.m. prayer service at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Helen was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Purl and Rose (Klave) Frank. She married Paul Abelson on Feb. 4, 1949, in Sioux City. Helen worked at JCPenney's and then at Thompson Drug where she met Paul.

Helen and Paul started the Billy Boy Restaurant in 1962 and ran it for many years. The restaurant continues to be owned by their family members.

Helen was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School there and at Whitfield United Methodist. She was a member of the Organ Club, Girls of '68 and the Woodman Newrow Sorority. She was a member of the Goodwill, V.F.W. and D.A.V. auxiliaries. Helen had been a Girl Scout leader and she was a world traveler.

Survivors include her husband Paul of Sioux City; four children, Thomas E. Abelson and his wife Kathy of Highland, N.J., DeLoris Friebus and her husband Dave of Sarasota, Fla., Robert E. Abelson and his wife Linda of Fairbury, Neb., and DeNise Bailey and her husband Randy of Sioux City; her brother and sisters, Pat Honeycutt and her husband Joe of Wichita, Kan., Clinton McKettrick of Abilene, Texas, Frances Finken and her husband Gary of Dakota Dunes, and Carol Krommenhoek and her husband Dave of Sergeant Bluff; 10 grandchildren, Doug Brand, Jonathon Friebus, Chris Abelson and his wife Melody, Tina Boulware and her husband Todd, Jennifer and Aaron Abelson, Melissa Wright and her husband Casey, Deidra Sommerville, and Nick and Kristi Bailey; 14 great-grandchildren, Trenton Brand, Tamen Brand, Kaleb, Nick and Collin Abelson, Carly and Haley Boulware, Austin and Jordan Case, Brayden Meyers, Lilly Hammitt, Aiden Wright, Brayden and Braxton Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers will be Chris Abelson, Aaron Abelson, Nick Bailey, Trent Brand, Jonathon Friebus and Doug Brand. Honorary pallbearers are Kaleb, Nick and Collin Abelson, Austin and Jordan Case, Brayden Meyers, Brayden and Braxton Bailey, Aiden Wright and Tamen Brand.
