SIOUX CITY | Ernest Milton "Ernie" Christiansen, 85, of Sioux City, formerly of Sloan, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at a Sergeant Bluff care facility after battling Alzheimer’s and congestive heart disease. The world and beef packing industry lost a great man.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be noon until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

"Ernie," as his friends and family knew him by, was born in Jefferson, S.D., on Feb. 12, 1931. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he was a medic from 1948 to 1951.

Upon leaving the military, he came home and married Dorothy McKenzie of Sioux City on July 29, 1951. To this union five children were born, Jim, Suzie, John, Julie, and Stephen Mark, who passed at birth.

He is survived by his amazing wife, Dorothy, of Sioux City; his children, Jim and Denise of Ogallala, Neb., Suzie Faltys/Kenton Peterson of Jefferson, John and Leigh Christiansen of Omaha, and Julie and Brad Tate of Walsh, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Mark; sisters, Bonnie and Lois; brother, Russ Christiansen; and parents, Milton and Grace Christiansen.

Ernie was quick to tell a story and a joke and never met a stranger. He was our father, our mentor and a friend. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Siouxland, 4300 Hamilton Blvd., Sioux City, IA, 51104. Phone: (712) 233-4144.
