Herbert David Wockenfuss, 83, of Sioux City, formerly of Ipswich, S.D., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Ipswich, with the Rev. George Dummann officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Aberdeen, S.D. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Gramm Funeral Home in Ipswich.

Herbert was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Groton, S.D., to Benjamin and Esther (Kloehn) Wockenfuss. He served with the U.S. Army Medics during World War II.

He married Ardella Weisenberger on July 22, 1952, in Bowdle, S.D. The couple made their home in Ipswich for 53 years. He was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for almost 10 years. He then worked at Ipswich Lumberyard, where he was the assistant manager until 1985. They moved to Sioux City in October 2005.

Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Darvin (Hazel) of Panama City, Fla., Duane (Wendy) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jim (Jan) of Staunton, Ill., Gene (Callie) of Flandreau, S.D., Gary (Kari) of Nebraska City, Neb., John (Deb) of Sioux City and Jared (Sandy) of Sherman, Texas; 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a cousin, Curt Wockenfuss; two sisters-in-law, Delores Wockenfuss and Betty (Woody) Scruggs; a brother-in-law, LeRoy (Vera) Weisenberger; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norman; two sisters, Irene Stavig and Erna Cafourek; and two nephews, Dan and Frank Cafourek.
