SALIX, Iowa -- Clayton "Jack" Van Cleave, 92, of Salix passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at his daughter's residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Catie Newman of Salix Community United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to http://www.christysmith.com">www.christysmith.com.

Clayton "Jack" Gary Van Cleave was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Winnebago, Neb., to Charles and Cecila (Gary) Van Cleave. He attended schools in Winnebago and Sioux City. He grew up in the Winnebago and Homer, Neb., area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

On April 14, 1942, he and Jean Engel were united in marriage in South Sioux City. The moved to Salix in the late 1940s. He was a self-employed mechanic and blacksmith. He owned his own business doing welding, engine overhauling and other metal fabrication.

He was a member of Salix American Legion and the Iowa Fireman's Association.

He is survived by his daughters, Joan Van Cleave of Smithland, Iowa, and Carol Oster of Austin, Texas; a son and his wife, Gary and Sandy Van Cleave of Hornick, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean in May 2000; and seven siblings.
