Helen C. Hilger, 93, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at a Sioux City nursing home.

There are no service planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Hilger was born May 27, 1912, in Sioux City, the daughter of Haftor and Lillian (Waldum) Sve. She graduated from Columbia College, then attended the University of Iowa, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1936, she was queen of the Seventh Mardi Gras, a pre-Lenten event sponsored by the St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

She was married to Mel Hilger for 53 years until his death in 1989. The couple had two daughters.

She was an active member of the Junior League. In later years, she was a volunteer with St. Luke's Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Julie Frey; a sister, Dr. Janice Sve; and two granddaughters, Ashley Brothers and Chelsea Mohr.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Nancy Brothers; and two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Holman and Ms. Harriet Sve.
