Benjamin "Ben" Holtgrewe Jr., 76, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Spaulding of Morningside Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ben was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Sioux City, the son of Benjamin and Anna Louise Holtgrewe Sr. He was raised in Remsen, Iowa, and attended Remsen-Union High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Deloris Ann Morgan on May 29, 1952, in Remsen. The couple lived in Remsen, Castle Rock, Colo., and returned to Sioux City in 1989. He had his own machine shop in Remsen known as Ben's Repair. He worked for Ames Construction in Castle Rock, Colo., and for Jensen Construction in Sioux City. He was employed at Interstate Auto Parts in Sioux City at the time of his death.

He was of the Lutheran faith. He served in the Remsen Fire Department for many years and as fire chief for the department. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 in Remsen and served as commander for three terms. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973 in Sioux City and served as post commander in 1989 and in 1999. He was serving as quartermaster for the Eighth District of Veterans of Foreign Wars from 1992 until present. The couple were given an honorary degree in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cooties.

He loved fishing and camping, which he did at Round Lake, Minn., for many years. What he loved most was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris of Sioux City; his children and their spouses, Rick and Joan of Castle Rock, Colo., Pamela and Dennis Montagne of Sioux City, Ken and Kendall of Climax Springs, Mo., and Jason and Shawn of Newell, Iowa; a special niece and her husband, Glenda and Joe Reed; five granddaughters; two grandsons; six great-grandchildren; three sisters; a sister-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Ronald; 11 brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Robbie.
