Joseph Silbernagel, 76, of Chamberlain, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Sunset Valley Haven Nursing Home in Chamberlain.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. today at Wevik Funeral Home in Chamberlain. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

Joseph Silbernagel was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Trial City, S.D., to John and Barbara (Schumacher) Silbernagel. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 21, 1945, serving in Germany during World War II. He was discharged on Dec. 2, 1946.

He married Agnes Wolf on May 10, 1951, in Bismark, N.D. The couple lived in Baker, Mont., until 1955 when they moved to Linton, N.D. He was employed with Red Owl Grocery Store. In 1957, they moved to Chamberlain, where he owned and operated Joe's Super Value. He continued to run the grocery store until 1975, when they moved to Akron, Iowa. They moved to Sioux City in 1977, where he worked for Coopers Market until 1992, when he retired and returned to Chamberlain. He entered Sunset Valley Haven on April 19, 2002.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6436. He enjoyed polka music.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Chamberlain; a daughter, Lola Brown of Chamberlain; a son and his wife, Larry and Vicky of Sioux City; a brother, Pete of Rio Dell, Calif.; a twin sister, Kay Chickadonz of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren, Jason and Jeremy Silbernagel and Brett and Blair Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry; a brother, Frank; and two sisters, Frances and Maggie.
