Lucille (Dean) Hodgdon, 93, of Wall Lake, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, with the Rev. Dr. Allen Call of First United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.

Mrs. Hodgdon, the daughter of Herbert C. and Maude (Coppock) Dean, was born March 2, 1909, at the family farm her grandfather had settled in 1868, near Herring, in Sac County, Iowa. She attended country school, graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1926, and then studied at Samuels School of Cosmetology in Sioux City.

She married Donald S. Hodgdon of Sioux City on Nov. 16, 1935, in Elk Point, S.D.

Prior to her marriage, she taught country school at Levey 8, the same school where both she and her mother had taught, and the school she had attended through grade eight. After finishing the required courses, she taught at Samuels School of Cosmetology until her husband entered the service in World War II. After her husband's military service, when he became a partner in Ace Dry Goods, she became a full-time homemaker and performed volunteer services for various organizations, including the Rehabilitation Center Preschool. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, dancing and golfing.

She had been a resident of Twilight Acres Nursing Home since her husband's death in December 1992. Prior to his death, they had been residents of Manor Circle in Sioux City.

Together with her husband, charities were performed quietly. In addition, they lavished loving care on their mothers, assuring that both lived in comfort during their declining years. Their nieces and nephews too, were always the recipients of their love and kindness.

Survivors include a brother, Max Crittenden, who is presently serving as a missionary in Bosnia; nieces, Dorothy Dean Hoft of St. Louis, Mo., Shirley Dean Prochnow of Deerfield, Ill., Bonnie Dean Helmuth of New Orleans, La., Betty Dean Oswald of Carroll, Iowa, and Janice Pritchett Fergursky of Tucson, Ariz.; and a nephew, Ronald Dean of El Cajon, Calif.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Velna (Mrs. Ernest) Janssen of Lake City, Iowa, and Ida of Clarence, Iowa; her brothers, Richard of Carroll, Iowa, Ralph and his wife, Alice of Wall Lake, and Floyd and his wife, Ruby of San Diego, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hodgdon Pritchett and her husband, Walter "Dutch" Pritchett of Tucson, Ariz. and formerly of Sioux City; and a nephew, Donald Janssen and his wife, Phyllis of Lake City, Ariz.

Memorials in her name may be directed to First United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
