George A. Cole, 98, of Sioux City died Friday, May 10, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Following the visitation, the body will be donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine per Mr. Cole's wishes. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Del Olivier of Augustan Lutheran Church officiating.

Mr. Cole was born April 24, 1904, in the Leeds area of Sioux City, the son of George R. and Dolly (Cheever) Cole. He was a graduate of Central High School. He received his B.S. degree in architectural engineering from Iowa State University in 1931.

He married Ellen V. Lyren on March 7, 1934, in Sioux City. She died July 14, 1968, in Iowa City, Iowa. He married Lenore C. Swanson on July 3, 1970, in Sioux City.

From 1972 to 1975, he was a councilman and mayor in Sioux City. From 1978 to 1981, he was a councilman, and from 1980 to 1981, he was mayor pro-tem. He was instrumental in obtaining many improvements for Siouxland, including the building of the downtown Hilton and J.C. Penney store and the Sioux City Federal Building. He helped finalize plans for the new Missouri River bridge and the Big Soo Floyd Control Project. He also was instrumental in the development of the downtown skywalk system.

He served as president of the Siouxland Ostomy Club for 14 years. He also was president of the Northwest Iowa Municipal League at one time.

He had attended both First United Methodist and Augustana Lutheran churches.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Stephen L. and Jane Cole of Wayzata, Minn.; a daughter and her husband, Victoria A. and Frank Plambeck of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Ted Plambeck of El Paso, Texas, Laurel and her husband, Rich Moore of Norfolk, Neb., Scott and his wife, Lila Plambeck of Sioux City, Kirsten and Pam Cuzick-Plambeck of Phoenix, Ariz., Brad and his wife, Tara Cole, Jeff and his wife, Camille Cole, and Matt and his wife, Carrie Cole, all of Minneapolis; and six great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Cole.

Memorials may be sent to the Siouxland Ostomy Club.
