Royal Quentin Lohry, 81, of Sioux City died peacefully Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Terry Templeton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Royal was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Bloomfield, Neb., the eldest son of A.W. and Belle (Schott) Lohry. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. He attended Iowa State University, where he belonged to the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was awarded the Cardinal Key, a scholastic and leadership honor. At Iowa State, he was the quarterback and team captain of the football team. "Ace" was drafted by the Detroit Lions, but instead enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served for three years during World War II as a Navy lieutenant and executive officer of an LCI (Landing Craft Infantry) in the Pacific. He returned to Sioux City to join the family business with his father at Kay Dee Feed Company.

On Nov. 27, 1946, he married Dorothy Norgaard from Harlan, Iowa, in Sioux City. He was CEO and president of Kay-Flo, a holding company for Kay Dee and Nutra-Flo.

Royal was an active member in the community and at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was past council president and coached church basketball. He served three years on the state board of Lutheran Social Services. He served on the board for Northwestern National Bank (Norwest Bank) in Sioux City. He was awarded the Key Way award by the downtown Rotary Club. He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine White Horse Mounted Patrol and also the Masons, Landmark Lodge, 103 A.F. & A.M. for nearly 50 years. He was active with the Easter Seal Society. He was a member of both the Cyclone Club and the Sioux City Boat Club. His love of trees went the gamut from planting seeds to whittling and woodworking. He enjoyed the outdoors and flying on Saturday mornings. Royal was loved by his family and friends. He was a good man who shared his humor, goodness and talents with many.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Jane Armstrong and her husband, Michael of Seattle, Wash.; his son, Tom and his wife, Karla of Sioux City; his daughter, Karen Van Delden and her husband, Dr. Jim of Neah Bay, Wash.; his grandchildren, Andrew and Alexandria; his brother, Bill and his wife, Dr. Doris A. Lohry of Sioux City; his sister-in-law, Doris Lohry of Sioux City; 14 nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

He is preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Kermit.

Pallbearers will be Eric, Dirk, Raun and Damon Lohry, Carlton Smith and Jay Norgaard.
