Matthew I. Artz, 62, of Huron, South Dakota and formerly of Sioux City died July 9, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after a long illness.

Mr. Artz was born June 17, 1925 at Miles City, Mont. He married Barbara Van Riper July 16, 1947 at Aberdeen. He lived in Sioux City from 1960 until 1963 and was employed by Good Shepherd Home and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Artz moved to Yankton, S.D. in 1963 and to Huron in 1968. He was employed by the Huron Daily Plainsman and the city of Huron. He was an Army Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, three sons, Larry Artz of Santa Rosa, California and Leonard Artz and Michael Burgess, both of Sioux Falls, seven daughters, Gwendolyn Jensen of Sioux City; Diane Ramsey of San Jose, California and Mary Schoenwetter, Victoria Ferguson, Margaret Quiram, Kathy Stahl and Wanda Artz, all of Huron; his mother, Catherine Artz of Aberdeen, four sisters, Marie Rieck of Aberdeen, Katherine Bastien and Natalie Schuring, both of Leeds, S.D. and Virginia Markovitz of Arkansas and 20 grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Huron and burial was Wednesday in Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis, S.D.
