Shirk, Retired Minister, Dies
Had Resided in Iowa Since 1863

(1852 – 1939)

The Rev. Joseph Casper Shirk, 87, retired Methodist minister and a resident of Iowa since 1863, died at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Albert E. Peterson, 3320 E. Thirty-fifth St., Saturday morning.

The Rev. Mr. Shirk was found dead in his chair by Mrs. Peterson.

Services will be at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Monday with burial in Pine Hill.

A native of Pennsylvania, the Rev. Mr. Shirk came to Louisa County, Iowa. He was granted a minister’s license in Ida Grove, Iowa in 1891 and in 1892 became a member of the Northwest Iowa Methodist conference. He retired in 1912 and went to Iowa Falls, Iowa, where he lived until 1938, then he and his wife moved to Des Moines.

Mrs. Shirk died October 25, 1938.

The Rev. Mr. Shirk is survived by two sons, H. Clyde Shirk, Worland, Wyo., and W. Vance Shirk, Lakeview, Iowa, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
