Death Follows Year's Illness Due to General Breakdown--Survived by Husband and Four Children--Funeral Arrangements Later

Mrs. Jemima E. Smylie, wife of Rev. Robert Smylie, who is widely known in Sioux City and northwest Iowa as a Methodist Episcopal minister and church worker, died last night at her home, 4808 Morningside Avenue. Death followed a year’s illness due to a general breakdown. She was 72 years old.

Mrs. Smylie is survived by her husband, Rev. Robert Smylie and four children—Mrs. Leila Cole, of Caldwell, Idaho, Mrs. Mabel Davidson of Chicago, Lorne Smylie, of Hartley, Iowa and Robert E. Smylie of Goldfield, Iowa.

Rev. Mr. Smylie formerly was pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church here. He also has been superintendent of the Sioux City district of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the last six years. While he was serving as a district superintendent, Rev. Mr. Smylie and Mrs. Smylie resided at Storm Lake, Early, Alta, Cherokee, Ida Grove, Fort Dodge, Algona and Sac City, Iowa.

Mrs. Smylie was an active worker in the church at each one of these places. She was especially interested in the Women’s Home Missionary Society, holding several offices at various times.

Mrs. Smylie was born April 14, 1846, at Oakland, Ont., Can. On June 18, 1873, she was married to Rev. Mr. Smylie, who was then a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church of that place. After living in Canada for several years they removed to Sac City, Iowa in 1880. Mrs. Smylie’s maiden name was Jemima Eddy.

Funeral arrangements have not been made. It is probable that the body will be taken to Alta, Iowa for burial beside the bodies of two of her children.
