John F. Wengert 1859 - 1939

John F. Wengert, 80, a resident of Woodbury County for nearly 60 years, died early Saturday morning at his home, 2025 S. Olive Street. He had been in ill health for some time, but had worked until Wednesday at a service station that he operated with his sons.

Born March 11, 1859, in Monroe County, Ohio, Mr. Wengert came to Iowa at the age of 21, settling near Smithland. He then went to Holly Springs where he ran a general store for 46 years. He came to Sioux City in April 1927 and opened the service station at 5400 Morningside Avenue.

Mr. Wengert had been a member of the Christian Church at Holly Springs for 55 years and was a member of Sundance Camp 184, M.W.A., and of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Surviving are the widow, Ella, two daughters, Mrs. P.E. Forney of Pierce and Mrs. W.G. Simmons of Watertown; three sons, Paul H., True H., and Donald W., all of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. L.P. Egger and Mrs. Fred Keesor, both of Woodsfield, Ohio, three brothers, H.G. Wengert of Iowa City, Dr. H.C. Wengert of grand Island, Nebraska and E. P. Wengert of Idaho Falls, Idaho, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The body is at the Nelson-Berger funeral home pending arrangements.
