Stephen J. Francis, Supervisor, Victim of Stroke

Stephen J. Francis, a member of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, died about 8 o’clock Thursday morning in his home at Smithland. Death followed a stroke. He was 50 years old.

Mr. Francis, serving his second term as a county supervisor, appeared to be in good health Wednesday when he attended to business matters in Sioux City and on Monday when he attended the meeting of the board of supervisors.

A lifelong resident of Woodbury County, Mr. Francis was born October 18, 1887, near Hornick. In 1907 he was married in Sioux City to Miss Nettie Jackson of Oto. The couple lived on a farm near Hornick until three years ago when they moved to Smithland.

The supervisor was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic lodge at Smithland as well as of Sioux City consistory.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, Marvin of Sioux City and Elmer of Smithland; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Benton of San Jose, California; seven brothers, G.W. of Kettle Falls, Washingtion, J.C. of Sebeka, Minnesota, J.A. and L.B. of Sioux City, H.W. of Washington, D.C. and L.H. and L.S. of Climbing Hill and five sisters, Mrs. M.E. Ringrose of Des Moines, Mrs. E. Ganoe of Sloan, Mrs. L R. Arnold of Hornick, Mrs. Ollie Jackson of Oto and Mrs. O.S. Bower of Smithland.
