SIOUX CITY | Robert W. “Bob” Vander Zee, 89, of Sioux City passed away suddenly Friday, June 10, 2016, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage, Northern Hills, 4000 Teton Trace, with the Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. A private family burial will be prior to the service. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bob was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sept. 25, 1926, the son of Dr. Jacob and Ethel (McKnight) Vander Zee. He attended University High School in Iowa City, and graduated from the University of Iowa in political science. Bob was a member of the SAE fraternity.

On Feb. 18, 1951, Bob and Joan Mangelsdorf were united in marriage in Iowa City. To that union, three sons were born.

Bob was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He served as president for two years and sang in the choir for many years. He was president of the Motor Carriers Association, worked in the traffic department of the Chicago Great Western Railroad and served as a traffic manager for Yellow Freight. Bob delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

Bob loved hunting, sports, gardening, and bridge and was a member of the Senior Center. He especially loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of 65 years; sons, Dr. John and wife, Chris of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Robert Jr. and wife, Sandra of Delavan, Wis., and Tom of Sioux City; and grandson, Joe and wife, Meredith and their children, Reece, Liam, Ayda, Blake and Nora, grandson, Jacob and his wife, Beth and their children, Jacob Jr., and Charlie Bell, and grandson, Daniel and his wife, Jamie and their daughter, Gwen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Lt. Colonel John Vander Zee.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation, St. John Lutheran Church or give a big hug to someone you love.
