HORNICK, Iowa | Eugene "Gene" Reed Summers, 55, formerly of Hornick and Smithland, Iowa, went to be with his heavenly father on June 22, 2015. Gene passed away due to complications from PTSD.

A celebration of life service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Smithland American Legion Hall in Smithland.

Gene was born in Sioux City, on April 15, 1960, to Eugene and Janet Summers. He was raised in Smithland until 1969, when his family moved to Hornick. While growing up, he attended Hornick United Methodist Church. He graduated from Westwood High School in 1978. After school, Gene served in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Gulf until 1982. In 1985, his son, Wade, was born. During his life, he enjoyed his careers in real estate, welding, and construction.

Gene loved to be around his friends and family.

He is survived by his only son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Karen Summers of Iowa City, Iowa; his sisters, JoLene and Dwayne Currie of Lincoln, Neb., Carmen and Tim Elliot of Vilinow, Ga., and Brenda and Allen White of Dalton, Ga.; eight nieces and nephews; and 17 grandnieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
