Mervin L. Hobbs, age 83, of Marshalltown, Iowa (formally of Hornick, Iowa) passed away on Sunday, November 09, 2014 at the Grandview Heights Rehab & Healthcare Center of Marshalltown, Iowa.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the United Methodist Church of Hornick, Iowa. The Reverend Jena Manchester will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the United Methodist Church of Hornick, Iowa. The Christensen ~ Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online to www.christensenvanhouten.com
Mervin L. Hobbs was born on May 16, 1931, in Hornick, Iowa, to Jean and Wylma (Cox) Hobbs. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church of Hornick, Iowa. Mervin attended school in Hornick and graduated from Hornick High School.
Mervin married Patricia Heacock, and they were blessed with four children; Mervin “Mickey”, Monte, Mark, and Lisa.
Mervin loved flying airplanes and worked as a local crop duster and applicator for Farm Co-op in the Hornick and Sloan, Iowa areas. Mervin semi-retired to Phoenix, Arizona, but would return to the area in the spring to spray for the Co-op and visit family.
Mervin loved aviation and built model remote control planes that were flown in the Byron Originals Aviation Expo in Ida Grove, Iowa. In his younger years Mervin was an accomplished bowler, bowling in many tournaments. He also enjoyed playing cards (especially a game called “DIMES”). Going to coffee at the local Burger King in Marshalltown with the boys, his beloved dog Tia and especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Mervin “Mickey” Hobbs of Dexter, MI; Lisa (Robert) Brewer of Ida Grove, IA; four grandchildren, Jessica (Michael) Quick of Marshalltown, IA; Jerry (Jamie) Anderson of Bronson, IA; Bob Brewer of Ida Grove, IA; Clarissa Hobbs of Sioux City, IA; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Dennis (Jenny) Hobbs of Chicago, IL.
Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Wylma Hobbs; two sons, Monte Hobbs and Mark Hobbs; and two sisters, Donna Hobbs and Iona Sulsberger.
