SIOUX CITY | Shirley M. Bartels, 81, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m., Friday, April 29, in Logan Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Eric Sayonkon of St. James Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Shirley was born Oct. 5, 1934, in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, the daughter of Robie and Maxine (Dahms) Nickols. Shirley Nickols married James Bartels on Aug. 16, 1951, in Fremont, Neb. Into this marriage, three children were born.

Shirley was employed with the Sioux City Community Schools as a lunchroom worker, serving for 20 years and retiring in 1991. She enjoyed decorating around the house, collecting sun flowers, anything leopard and had a vast collection of hand bells from around the country and anything Cardinals. Mrs. Bartels was a 55-year member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Shirley is survived by a daughter, Jeri Ann Bartels of Elk Grove, Calif.; a daughter, Renee McNaughton and her husband, Denny of Sioux City; a son, Rick A. Bartels of Sioux City; a brother, Phil Nickols and his wife, Rita of Thornton, Colo.; grandchildren, Shane McNaughton and Amanda Rose; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a brother, Robie D. Nickols.
