ELK POINT, S.D. | Donald Paul "DP" Burns, 73, of Elk Point passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016, at a Sioux City hospital with his family by his side.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, with the Rev. Erik Olson officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, with military rites conducted by Elk Point V.F.W. and American Legion. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Kober Funeral Home in Elk Point. Condolences may be posted online at www.koberfuneralhome.com.

Donald was born on July 30, 1942, in Sioux City, the son of Avery John and Alice Marie (Ross) Burns. He attended school in Villisca, Iowa, and obtained his general education diploma while he was in the military.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country in 1964. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in October 1970.

DP married Phyllis Kaye Rosenbaum on Dec. 1, 1979. They enjoyed raising their children and planting mamma's garden on the farm south of Elk Point until he moved his dear wife to town. She preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 2014. DP worked for the family business Burns Trucking as a mechanic and driving truck until the business was sold. He furthered his employment at Thermo Bond Buildings until retirement.

In his spare time, DP enjoyed spending time fishing and junking. His most prized pastime was his annual venture in being Santa Claus for all the children and even some adults in town.

He is survived by his loving children, Marie Ann Burns of Sioux City, Donnie Purser, Cassondra (Dave) Rabe of Gayville, S.D., and Rachelle Paulson of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Phylleshia Larsen of Sioux City, Jenifer VanBeek (Brandon) of McCook Lake, S.D., Tyler Paulsen of Branson, Mo., and Daulton Hawthorne and Darien Rabe, both of Gayville; six great-grandchildren; and his brother, Fred Burns of Creston, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; his son, Jonathan Burns; his brother, Elmer (Georgie) Burns; and his sisters, Jean Welch and Edie Arntzen.
