Nick Simon, 79, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin M. Richter officiating. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of the Resurrection, Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Air Refueling Wing. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Simon was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Ike and Mary (Chidu) Simon. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Pemee Marie Juarez on April 10, 1945, in Sioux City. He had been a professional sign painter with several local companies, among them being, S.S. Coe Painting, Avery Brothers and Meier Painting and Decorating. He also was a warehouse supervisor with National Furniture Co. and The Paper Co.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He also was a member of Painters Union Local 214 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He painted the crew chief and pilots' names and the nose art on the 185th's assigned aircraft for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Pemee; a son and his wife, Nick A. and Carol Simon of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Roger Johnson of Sioux City and Cindy and Bruce Johnson of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Andrew and Clara Simon of Farmington, Minn., and Joseph and Marcia Simon of Sioux City; three sisters, Mary Hickson of Sergeant Bluff, Jennie Phelps of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Joan and her husband, James Sweeney of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ike, John, Danny and George Simon; two sisters, Anne Cain and Helen Morse; a great-grandchild, Lexie Johnson; and three nephews, John Cain, Randy Simon and Mark Simon.

Pallbearers will be Blake Simon, Jason Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Mark Whitehead, Joe Zediker and Troy Davis
