Lawrence B. "Larry" Schoon, 76, of Sioux City died of congestive heart failure on Monday, April 7, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Leo Kostizen officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Schoon was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Rolfe, Iowa, the son of Bert Behrend and Jennie Marie (Pruin) Schoon. He was raised in Rolfe, Pocahontas, Fort Dodge and Ottumwa, Iowa. He attended schools in Rolfe and Pocahontas and graduated from Rutland (Iowa) High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Rose Elizabeth Jones on Aug. 27, 1949, in Calhoun County, Iowa. He was employed with Goodyear Tire and Gus Glaser Meats in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and John Morrell in Ottumwa and Sioux City. He had been a resident of Sioux City since 1973.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was an elder and a Sunday school teacher. He served in the stewardship committee, the building committee and was active in everything at the church. He was a member of the Lions Club, where he was named the Lion of the Year in 2001. He sang with the Nordic choir. He enjoyed woodworking, antiques, going to auctions and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Elizabeth Schoon of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Dan and Leslie Schoon of Paso Robles, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Jim Seiwald of Robins, Iowa; four sisters, Dorothy Rennie of Fort Dodge, Delores and her husband, Richard Hacker of Humboldt, Iowa, Alice and her husband, Norman Johnson of Lehigh, Iowa, and Janice and her husband, LeRoy Maag of Lincoln, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Donald and Jean Schoon of Lorraine, Kan.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Noyes of Minneapolis, Bethany Noyes of Ames, Iowa, and Laura Seiwald of Robins, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
