William H. Schumaker, 85, of Sioux City died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Alex T. Washington officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Schumaker was born May 31, 1915, in LaGrange, Ill., the son of William and Mary (Hotchkiss) Schumaker. He served in the U.S. Army as a teletype operator from 1942 to 1945. He achieved the rank of corporal.

He retired from the Government Printing Office in Washington D.C. in 1972. He moved to Sioux City in 1977.

He married Pat Sweisberger in 1987.

He was a member of the Chanters with the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple and enjoyed calligraphy and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, William Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Pennellville, N.Y., Robert and his wife, Cathy of Olney, Md., and Fred of Lantana, Fla.; a daughter and her husband, Rita and Charles Kosack of Palm Bay, Fla.; three stepsons and their wives, Bill and Kathy Sweisberger, Ken and Kim Sweisberger and Stan and Zaida Sweisberger, all of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many step-grandchildren and great-step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Schumaker; and a sister, Kay Schumaker.
