16 July 2002Leonard E. Wright, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Calvin La'Huereux officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Wright was born June 13, 1922, in Atkinson, Neb., the son of Guy and Laura (Tesch) Wright. He grew up on a ranch in the Chambers, Neb., area and graduated from Chambers High School in 1941. He worked various jobs in the Chambers community before entering the military in 1944. He trained at a camp in Washington before being sent overseas for two years. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. He was discharged in 1946.
He was married to Doris Harvey. He later married Leone Woodley Leet on Feb. 14, 1970. Leone died May 10, 1990.
He lived in California and worked in the Franciscan Stoneware and later moved back to Sioux City. He owned Wright Transfer and delivered furniture for Bekins. At the time of his retirement, he was working at Walinsky Lumber Co.
Leonard loved to hunt and fish with his faithful dog, "Dutch." He enjoyed traveling in his motor home and made trips to Canada and Florida with relatives. He also loved to square-dance, and at one of these dances in June 1991, he met Darlene Martin, who became his best and special friend.
Survivors include his best and special friend, Darlene Martin of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Eldon and Sharon of Madison, Neb.; three daughters, Nelda Wright of Springfield, Mo., Annette and her husband, Jerry Kahautek of Yankton, S.D., and Gayle and her husband, Terry McLean of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister and her husband, Arlene and Wade Davis of Ewing, Neb.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Scott Lanagan, Rod Martin, Paul Downing, Jeremy Wright, Ryan Jacobson and Troy Bauder.
