Gene E. Sherman, 78, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, August 27, 2000, in South Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Rabbi Yossi Zylberberg officiating. Burial will be in Mount Sinai Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Sherman was born November 13, 1921 in Sioux City, the son of Philip and Minnie (Epstein) Sherman. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. He attended the University of Nebraska. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He married Nancy Tessar June 22, 1986, in Sioux City. He was a sportscaster for Channel 9 and Channel 4 for more than 50 years. He also did broadcasting for KMNS Radio for many years.
He was a member of Congregational Beth Shalom.
Survivors include his wife; three step-sons, Tom Tessar of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jon Tessar of St Paul, Minn. and Bill Tessar of Moorhead, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Coehn of Omaha; a niece and nephew; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Pallbearers will be Ray Nacke, Terry Gottberg, Leon Shortenhaus, Walt Fiegel, Scott France and Jim Heinrich.
