William F. “Fred” Wortman, 81, of Sioux City died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

The body was cremated.

There will be no service or visitation. Burial will be at a later date in the Sergeant Bluff Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Wortman was born July 21, 1920, in Sergeant Bluff, the son of William A. and Bine (Jorgensen) Wortman.

He grew up in Sergeant Bluff and attended schools in Sergeant Bluff. He graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in May 1938 and then attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in Sitka, Alaska, Aleutian Islands, Guam and at the American Embassy in Moscow. He also served during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1954. He retired from ITT General Controls in Glendale and Burbank, Calif., in 1980, then moved to Sioux City.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary A. Thatcher of Coalgate, Okla., and Helen P. Holder of Sioux City; seven nephews and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Viola Holder; and a brother, Harry A. Wortman.
