Salix, Iowa—Delbert W. Wilt, 76, of Salix died Saturday September 9, 2000 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295 of Sloan, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil Scriptural service at 7 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
Mr. Wilt was born November 21, 1923, in Salix, the son of Milton and Marion (Byers) Wilt. He graduated from Sloan High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946, in the Asiatic-Pacific area, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Palau Island, Ryukyu Islands and China. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart Medal for injuries suffered in the Battle of Peleliu.
He married Rosalie Lamoureux August 21, 1947, in Salix. The couple resided on the Wilt family farm, where he was a longtime farmer.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295, and a charter member of Sloan Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Dennis M. and Judy of Sloan, Maurice D. and Cathy of Salix, Raymond H. and Carol of Gainesville, Fla., and Michael W. and Rhonda of Sloan; eight grandchildren, Stacy, Aaron, Angie, Ann, Katie, Ryan, Daniel and Jon, and a sister, Allison Holdcroft of Onawa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Steven D. and Jenna Rose; a sister, Marilyn McCoy; and a brother-in-law, Ray McCoy.
Pallbearers will be Dan and Monty McCoy, Jon Wilt, Bret Steinhoff, Tom Copple and Guy Hopkins.
