John Samore, 84, of Los Angeles, California formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at his son’s residence in Glendale, California.
Trisagion services were held April 1 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles. Graveside services were held April 2 in Valhalla Cemetery, North Hollywood, California. Arrangements were under the direction of Callanan Mortuary in Los Angeles.
Mr. Samore was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Corumba, Brazil, the son of Sam and Alma Samore. He attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High School.
He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He married Nellie Swyder in 1945 in Kansas City. She died Jan. 1, 1996.
He was owner and president of the Vermont Outlet, True Value Store in Los Angeles.
He was a former member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City. He was active in community affairs and enjoyed traveling and photography.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, John and Gayle, Ronald and Rose and James and Beatriz, all of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren, John III, Gina, Michelle, Jamie, Peter, Valerie, Ronald, Jennifer and Christina; a brother and his wife, Edward F., and Molly of Sioux City and two sisters, Mary Stevens and Tillie Helmers, both of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Jo Samore of Sioux City and Phyllis Samore of Milwaukee, Wis.; nine grandchildren and many nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Emil, Ted, and Bill.
Memorials in his name may be directed to St. Yhomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City.
