Harvey M. Sanford, 80, of Sioux City died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at a Sioux City retirement home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. Sanford was born June 11, 1919, in Chicago, the son of Samuel and Lillian (Ryderberg) Sanborn. He attended school in Chicago and graduated from Grinnell (Iowa) College.

He married Joan Levinson on Sept. 18, 1949, in Chicago. She died Feb. 17, 1997.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific with the Radio Signal Corps.

He began his journalism career with the Lake City (Iowa) Graphic in 1949. He later served as editor of the Fayette County Leader at Fayette, Iowa, and the Spirit Lake (Iowa) Beacon. He was the news director at Radio Station KICD in Spencer, Iowa, from 1950 to 1960. He also worked part time for the Journal as a Spencer area correspondent.

He joined the news staff at the Sioux City Journal in 1960 and was assigned to the copy desk editing state news for the morning edition. In 1972, he was promoted the station editor and more recently served as day police reporter. He entered Indian Hills Care Center in 1991.

He was a past president of the Iowa Radio-Television News Director Association and president of the Sioux City Newspaper Guild 123 for over 20 years. He was also active in Sioux City’s Crime stopper program, Greater Sioux City Press Club and Habitat for Humanity. His avocations include being a canoe instructor for the Red Cross, baritone soloist and a member of barbershop choruses.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Steven and Susan of Des Moines and David and Brenda of Sioux City; two daughters, Lizabeth Slotsky of Sioux City and Sarah Sanford and her husband, Michael Colling of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren, Jessica Elkins, Naomi Smith, Amy, Rachael, Emily, Amanda, Eric, Natalie and Brian Sanford and Aaron and Samuel Slotsky; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sidney, Robert and Chester, and a sister, Muriel Vanda.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church.
