Donald B. Smith, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Richard Kretzschmar and Gordon Watson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Bert L. Smith Post 134 and the 185th Fighter Wing. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Funeral Service.
Mr. Smith was born June 23, 1922, in Ponca, Nebr., the son of Harry L. and Effie (Severance) Smith. He graduated from Central High School in 1941. He was employed with Armour and Co. until 1943. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He married Helen Bream on April 17, 1947, in Sioux City. Following his discharge, he attended Morningside College for two years. He was then employed with Iowa Public Service as a journeyman meter man for 34 years. He retired in 1984.
He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, served as choir president, chairman of the music committee, and held various offices. He was a member of Landmark Lodge 103 A.F. and A.M., Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and American Legion Bert L. Smith Post 134 of Elk Point, S.D. He also coached Y.M.C.A. church basketball for many years and taught life saving techniques to junior high school student and employees at Iowa Public Service.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Roger and Jan of Jefferson, S.D.; a daughter, Nancy Smith of Omaha; a sister and her husband, Virginia and George Carey of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Aaron and Abigail Smith, Sarah Heckathorn, Benjamin, Autumn and Shane Givehand; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Warren and Allen Watson, William Jr. and Steven Voss, Joe Juarez and Bill Heckathorn.
Memorials in his name may be directed to Whitfield United Methodist Church.
