James C. Schaner, 79, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital of a massive heart attack.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Alfred McCoy officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Schaner was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Salix, Iowa, the only son of Casper and Phyllis (Wagman) Schaner. He attended school in Salix, Mapleton and Cathedral Grade School. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941, during World War II, where he served four and one half years, of which two and one half years were served in the South Pacific where he was a pharmacist first class.

He met and married Jeannine M. Maulson in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after the war. They were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids on April 12, 1947.

He owned and operated the Schaner Beauty Salon for 15 years in Sioux City. He was also a representative in sales for Sioux Specialty Co. for 25 years.

He was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church for 40 years and a seven year member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus and was in a bowling league for nine years. He enjoyed traveling for many years with his wife.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Debra and Tom McKee of Elkhorn, Nebr.; four sons, Dale and his wife, Janet, of Apple Valley, Minn., Gary of Vermilion, S.D., Gregg and his wife, Monica, of Columbus, Ohio, and Dean of Houston, Texas, eight grandchildren, Jim McKee of Omaha, Jason, Zachary and Amanda Schaner of Minneapolis, Eric and Jennifer Schaner of Vermilion and Abbie and Michael Schaner of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Sierra Scott of Omaha and Ethan Schaner of St. Paul, Minn.
