Richard W. Wigton, 76, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. Timothy J. Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American legion Monahan Post 64, Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil services at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Wigton was born Nov. 21, 1923, in Watertown, S.D., the son of Philip R. and M. Frances (Reeves) Wigton. He moved with his family to Sioux City in 1930. He attended Cathedral Grade School, Trinity High School and Morningside College. He also took classes at Briar Cliff College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a cryptographer from 1934 to 1946.

He married Mary Ellen McNally on April 12, 1947, in Sioux City. In 1946, he was employed with Sioux City Traffic Bureau, where he later became the commissioner. In 1967, he was employed as purchasing and transportation director with Sioux Bee Honey association and later became executive vice president in 1984. He retired in 1992.

He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, the Men’s Club and served as an Usher. He was a member of Sioux City Airport Advisory board, where he served as Chairman of the year. He served as secretary for Sioux City Dock Commission, where he was influential in bringing barge traffic into Sioux City. He was also a member of Coast Guard Auxiliary, Hawkeye Gun and Rifle club and American Legion Monahan Post 64. He enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, woodworking and photography.

Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Timothy R. And Kaye, James P. and Stefani and John F. and Jill, all of Sioux City and Kevin and Pamela of Omaha; three daughters and their husbands, Mary Margaret and Richard Aspleaf and Catherine “Kate” and Dean Duzik all of Sioux City, and Jean M. and Roger Dufresne of Kansas City, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren, Sara lee, Jeff, Nick, Sam, Ben, Megan and Christopher Wigton, Ryan Aspleaf, Emily, Alex and Adam Duzik and Lauren Defresne.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Donald R., Philip V. and James E.

Pallbearers will be Timothy, Kevin and John Wigton, Richard Aspleaf, Dean Duzik and Roger Dufresne.

Memorial may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
