Sergeant Bluff—Harold L. “Smitty” Smith, 79, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Sergeant Bluff.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Mr. Smith was born August 22, 1921 in Van Wert, Ohio, the son of Roy C. and Dora (Byrd) Smith. He graduated from Ansonia High School in Greenville, Ohio, in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served from 1942 to 1945 as a B-17 pilot, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. He had flown 30 missions in Europe. He moved to Sioux City in 1945.
He married Donna Fae Nielsen on Dec. 29, 1948, in Nebraska. He was employed as a salesman at several Sioux City businesses. He later operated Smitty’s Derby Gas Station during the 1960’s. He later was employed in local parking plants, retiring from Floyd Valley Packing in 1986.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting and airplanes.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Sandra and James Fahrendholz and Cindy and Roger Posey, all of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Brian and Brad Fahrendholz and Cathy and Andy Posey; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother in Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy; and a brother, Joe.
Pallbearers will be Brian and Brad Fahrendholz, Kevin Stevens, Robert and David Hilton and Jeremy Barrett.
