Lawrence A. Watkins, 67, of Sioux City died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Lawler of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Family burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Hubbard, Neb., at a later date. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Mr. Watkins was born March 28, 1933, in Hubbard, Neb., the son of Hollis and Mary A. (Sullivan) Watkins Sr. He grew up in Hubbard and attended school in Hubbard and at Emerson Catholic. He graduated from Hubbard High School. He married Katherine Gatzemeyer on March 2, 1957, at Travis Air Force Base Chapel in Fairfield, Calif. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1957.

He was a truck driver for various trucking companies, most recently with Campbell Grading in Jefferson, S.D.

He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed reading, camping, boating and collecting vintage model cars.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Phillip and Brenda of Joshua, Texas, and Norman and Brenda of Jefferson, S.D.; three daughters, Janice and her husband, Boyd Newsom of Kearney, Mo., Louise and her husband, Kevin Keleher of Sioux City, and Laura Mormann and her fiance, Kevin Steggemann of Des Moines; six brothers, Ray of Sioux City, Jerry of Hubbard, John of Blair, Neb., Hollis Jr. of Sioux City, Elmer of South Sioux City, and Robert of Montana; a sister, Mary Starzl of Emerson, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Kevin and Mindy Keleher, Patricia, Nikole, Stephanie and Nicholas Watkins, Cody, Kyle and Jake Newsom, and Caleigh Mormann; and a great-grandson.
