The Rev. Gabriel A. O'Rourke, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger Augustine, Vicar General for the Diocese of Sioux City, will be the principal celebrant with other priests concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Jefferson, S.D. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service Friday at the church.

The Rev. O'Rourke was born May 14, 1913, in Sioux City, the son of Francis P. and Mary L. (Brouillette) O'Rourke. He attended St. Boniface Grade School, Trinity High School, Trinity College, all of Sioux City, and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis.

He was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 16, 1945, at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Sioux City by the Most Rev. Edmund Heelan.

He served as assistant chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City from 1945 to 1949. He was assistant pastor at St. Joseph Church in Jefferson, Iowa, from 1949 to 1950, and St. John The Baptist in Bancroft, Iowa, from 1950 to 1954. He served as pastor at Alvord and Doon, Iowa, from 1954 to 1956, Our Lady of Good Council in Holstein, Iowa, from 1956 to 1958, St. Mary Church in Pomeroy and Palmer, Iowa, from 1958 to 1959, St. Mary Church in Oto, Iowa, and St. Philip in Hornick, Iowa, from 1959 to 1960. He was pastor of St. Joseph Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, from 1960 to 1967, Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa, from 1967 to 1976 and St. Margaret Church in Rolfe, Iowa, from 1976 to 1977. He retired in October 1977.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Hodgeson of Adenal, Calif.; two nieces, Carol Jackson of Rudy, Ark., and Patricia Hodgeson of San Diego; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia O'Rourke and Valerie Hodgeson
