28 December 2000Frances Sprague Friesner George, 89, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City following a brief illness.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Algona, Iowa, at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
Mrs. George was born May 6, 1911, in Grinnell, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Cole and Harriette "Hattie" (Whitford) Clayberg. She received her bachelors degree from Grinnell College and later attended Morningside College in Sioux City and the University of Iowa.
She was employed as a teacher and librarian in Shipley, Algona, Ames and Sioux City, Iowa, retiring in 1976.
She married Donald George on Aug. 6, 1982, in Grinnell. The couple made their home in Evanston, Ill., until moving to Iowa City in 1986. Her husband died in 1999.
She was a member of the Methodist church and P.E.O. Chapter JF. She enjoyed gardening and participated on the Oaknoll Residence landscape committee.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue and her husband, John Pedersen and Margaret Rutter, all of Ames, Iowa; two sons, Steven Sprague of Marion, Iowa, and Larry Sprague and his wife, Alexandra of Sioux City; two stepdaughters, Dr. Kathy and her husband, Larry Baldwin of Wilmette, Ill., and Marilyn Nelson of San Anselmo, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Gretchen, Allison, Tracy, Todd, Troy, Bethany and Andrew; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Harriette Lawrence of Apple Valley, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her first two husbands, Earl C. Sprague and Walter L. Friesner.
Memorials may be directed to Coralville Public Library, Grinnell College or the Oaknoll Landscape Committee.
