Emil A. Vala, 65, of Sioux City died Monday, March 8, 1999, at his residence.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel M. Greving officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Air National Guard, 185th Fighter Wing. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Morningside Funeral Home.

Mr. Vala was born May 29, 1933, in Ord, Neb., the son of Frank J. and Antonia M. (Moravecek) Valla. He was raised in Ord.

He married Janice L. Henry on Oct. 9, 1959, in Sioux City.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August 1950, serving with the security police squad in the Strategic Air Command. He was stationed at various bases in Europe, the United States and in Canada. He retired as a senior master sergeant on Aug. 31, 1973.

The couple returned to Sioux City in 1973. He owned and operated a business from 1973 to 1983.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Wayne and Vicki of Sioux City and Warren and Lisa of Minneapolis, Minn.; four daughters and their husbands, Valerie and Randy Fredericksen of Kearney, Neb., Veronica and Douglas Birk of Minneapolis, Verna and Dale Kluckman of Sioux City and Emily and Howard Thomas of Kent, England; two brothers and their wives, Bill and Sophia Valla of Ord and Frank and Ethel Valla of Hastings, Neb.; two sisters, Rose Brittenham of Ord and Agnes Einspahr of Arcadia, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Marianna Valla of Kingston, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Vala; and a brother, Joseph Valla.
