11 March 1999Benedict G. "Dick" Flammang, 69, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Monday, March 8, 1999, in St. Francis, Kan.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Flammang was born March 31, 1929, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Louise (Kipp) Flammang. He was raised in Mapleton, Iowa, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He married Helen Erlemeier on Sept. 18, 1951, in Danbury, Iowa. He had lived in Gilmore City and Pocahontas, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City in 1967. He was employed with the Sioux City Community School District as a first class engineer, retiring in 1993. He was also employed with Catholic Charities and Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir, and he was a former member of Third Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Don and Donelle of Dallas, Ore.; three daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Stu Kappes, Denise and Tom Gill and Darla and Scott Flynn, all of Sioux City; his mother of Battle Creek, Iowa; three brothers, Jerry of Hot Springs, Ark., LeRoy of Norwalk, Calif., and Cecil of Bentonville, Ark.; two sisters, Jody Lee of Cucamonga, Calif., and Angie Fischer of Wagner, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, Jen Evans, Ben and D.J. Flammang, Casey Kappes, Keely, Keith and Konner Gill, and Melissa, Nicole and Brianna Flynn; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Keith, and his father.
Pallbearers will be Jim Zahnley, Joe McNamara, Randy Ernst, Dennis Nepper, and Brian and Brad Brent.
