7 January 1999Charles Albert Gries, 97, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at Casa de Paz in Sioux City.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Christy-Smith Funeral Home, the Rev. Dennis Mix officiated. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Gries was born May 29, 1901, in Woodbine, Iowa, the son of John Elmer and Jessie Lucille (Brown) Gries. He was raised in Harlan, Iowa, and moved with his family to Thunder Hawk, N.D., when he was 12 years old.
He married Selma Schrader on Sept. 8, 1920, in McIntosh, S.D. The couple moved to Grant Center in 1929 and to Sioux City in 1949. He was employed with Milwaukee Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1967. She died May 1, 1990, in Sioux City.
Survivors include a son and his wife, William and Wilhelmine of Sioux City; a daughter, Lavina Sewalson of Sioux City; three sisters, Florence Arp and Evelyn Golden, both of Sioux City and Blossom Payne of Missouri; a brother and his wife, Melvin and Cheryle of Boone, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Clifford, Norman and Richard; and two sisters, Daisy and Ethel.
Pallbearers will be Norman Jr. and Aaron Gries, Allan Goulette, Allan, Don and Gunner Sewalson
