1 March 1999Richard D. Nelson, 73, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel
with the Rev. Arlo Petersen of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. The body will be cremated following services.
Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 12, 1926, to Rudolph M. and Margaret (Nelson) Nelson, in Sioux City. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1948. He married Deloris Eastman Aug. 19, 1949, in Sioux City and then, Arlene Welch April 28, 1978, in Sioux City.
He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a gunner's mate 2nd Class in the Pacific Theater. He served with the Sioux City Fire Dept. for 37 years, retiring as a lieutenant. He was a former member of Augustana Lutheran Church and a member of the Iowa Association of Retired Fire Fighters.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Dave and Julie of Sioux City and Michael and Pam of Longmont, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Marty McGlothlen of McCook Lake, S.D.; a stepson, Roy Welch of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Deb Bjork of Oklahoma; four sisters and their husbands, Betty Ann and Doug Justice, of Cape Coral, Fla., Helen and Lester Woolworth, of Sioux City, Virginia and Larry Smith, of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Elane and Larry Guerra, of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Robert; and a sister, Violet Auen.
