Dixine V. Sutherland, 70, of Sioux City, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her residence, due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Private funeral services will be Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. A private family burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Sutherland was born March 17, 1929, in Sioux City, the daughter of Dick William and Annie (Johnsen) Verstegen. She graduated from Central High School, and attended the University of Minnesota, and Mac Murray College, in Jacksonville, Ill., receiving a BA degree in June of 1951.

She married Murray Lee Sutherland on Aug. 8, 1954, in Sioux City. He died on May 4, 1969.

She taught school in Kenosha, Wis., at Sunnyside School, and at Floyd, Washington, and Crescent Park Elementary School in Sioux City. While teaching, she also worked part-time at D.W. Verstegen Printing Inc., Fishgalls Fashion, and Book People in the Market Place.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School for 25 years, and serving on Parish Education, the Building Committee, and the Church Council. She was also a member of Lydia and Racheal Circle, and the First Lutheran Church Women.

She was Past Matron of Rose Croix Chapter 400 Order of the Eastern Star, a past member of Junior League, past member of American Girls, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Eta Chapter, and PEO Chapter GR, and the Sioux City and Iowa Retired Educators. She was a member of MDA and the support group of ALS in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert Murray and Pamela Sue of Owings Mills, Md.; two daughters and their husbands: Annie Louise and Stephen Floyd Oliver of Des Moines, Iowa, and Barbara Dixine and Mark Allen Smither from Sioux Falls, S.D.; two grandchildren: Jacob William Smither, and Maggie Anne Smither; a sister and her husband, Shirley Ann and Thomas Geelan from Buffalo, Minn.; nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Marion and Glenn LeGrand, Nancy Stille, and Janet Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant son, John Dirk Sutherland.

Pallbearers will be Mark Smither, Stephen Oliver, Wesley Jung, Stephen Geelan, Larry Stille, and Glenn LeGrand.
