SIOUX CITY | George A. Kazos, 79, of Sioux City passed away on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Lucas Rice officiating. Burial will be in St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. George was born Sept. 3, 1935, in Sioux City; he was the son of Alex N. and Inda (Black) Kazos. George went to grade school in Sioux City and in New York, and then studied in Greece before attending the Wentworth Military Academy in Springfield, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. Following the service, he came back to Sioux City and worked with his father in the family business.

He married Lois Lucore on Dec. 2, 1959, in Sioux City. To this union three children were born, Solon, Alekos "Alex" and Tanya. George owned and operated the Bonanza Restaurant in Sioux City for many years.

He married Sharon (Spencer) Vasquez on Feb. 14, 1985, in Sioux City.

George is survived by his wife, Sharon of Sioux City; three children, Solon Kazos and his wife Elizabeth of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Alekos "Alex" Kazos and his wife Stacy of Dakota Dunes, and Tanya Schlemmer and her husband Layne of Flower Mound, Texas; his brothers and sisters, Don Dinoes and his wife Fran of Eagle Rock, Colo., Laine Kinney of Surprise, Ariz., Nick Kazos and his wife Donna of Lincoln, Neb., and Lex Kazos and his wife Judy of Storm Lake, Iowa; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Willie Vollmar, Cleo Manolis and Katharine Hanna.

Pallbearers will be Layne Schlemmer, Austin Kazos, Mark Hanna, Scott Haberer, Alex A. Kazos and Joe Lohr.

Memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Orthodox Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
