SIOUX CITY | Dean Carl Von Bergen, 79, of Sioux City, formerly of Moville, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 at a local hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, with the Rev. Mark J. Stoll officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Arlington Cemetery in Moville. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Dean was born March 11, 1935, in Platte Center, Neb. He was raised in Platte Center. He then enlisted with the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Germany. After his discharge he attended Wayne State College for his undergraduate studies. While in Wayne, Neb., he met and married Sharon Zimmer on June 4, 1960.

The couple moved to Ricketts, Iowa, where Dean taught and coached at Charter Oak/Ute Community School District. Meanwhile he obtained his master’s degree in education through the University of Nebraska in Omaha. In 1970 Dean and his family moved to Moville, where he served as principal and athletic director for the Woodbury Central Community School District for 25 years. Dean coached and was a driver’s ed instructor both in Charter Oak and in Moville.

Dean loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers, his race horses, and card playing with friends and family. Before being slowed by health issues, Dean enjoyed entertaining friends, hunting, fishing, dancing, golfing and gardening.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Susan and Louis Bock of Moville, Mike and Lisa Von Bergen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Laura and Cory Carlow of La Vista, Neb.; 11 grandchildren, Michelle (Robert) Bell, Louis Scott (Angela) Bock, Jarod (Rebecca) Bock, Jacob, Cierra and Hunter Von Bergen, Taylor, Cameron, Preston and Reilly Carlow and Jason Victor; six great-grandchildren, Kelton, Lillian, Grace, Louis, Elanora and Ezra; a sister and her husband, Barbara and William Keeley of Aurora, Colo.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Lloyd and Dona Lutjens of Columbus, Neb; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon; a sister, Marilyn Lutjens; and an infant sister.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Lutjens, Dan Lutjens, Tom Ryan, Tom Cooper, Bob Severeide, Russ Spotts, Bill Urwiler, Greg Royer and Todd Tabke.

Memorials may be directed to the First Trust & Savings Bank in Moville, where a student scholarship fund will be established in Dean’s name
