The Anthon Herald
22 April 1936

Following an illness of five months, Mrs. John McDermott who resided three miles north of Oto passed away early Sunday morning in St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, where she had been undergoing treatment for two weeks. Previous to that time she had spent several months in the Hartley Hospital at Battle Creek. Everything possible in a medical way was done for her but she was beyond cure and the most physicians could do for her was to relieve her suffering.

Anna Marie Henningsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henningsen, was born at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, May 11, 1892. When she was sixteen years of age, she emigrated to the United States and made her home with her sister, Mrs. William Kant, at Lawton, Iowa.

She was married September 16, 1914, to John B. McDermott of Moville, Iowa. To them eight children, three of whom died in infancy, were born. The first eight years of her married life were spent in the Bronson community. In 1922 the McDermotts moved to Lucky Valley west of Anthon, and for six years John and Joe McDermott farmed together in that vicinity. In 1928 the John McDermott family moved east of Anthon and farmed there until two years ago, when they moved to the Oto community.

Surviving Mrs. McDermott are her husband; four sons, Leonard, John, Raymond and Richard; a daughter, Mary Ann; her mother who lives in Germany; a brother, Gerrett Henningsen of Sioux City; and two sisters, Mrs. William Kant of Ironton, Minnesota; and Mrs. Carl Empen of Lawton, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Oto, the Rev. Fr. Charles Ernst celebrating the mass. Burial was in Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery, Anthon, under direction of Hudgel's Funeral Service.
