Funeral Services Held Monday For Hilda M. Smith
Funeral services for Hilda M. Smith 90, of Climbing Hill, were held Monday March 23, 1987 at 9:00 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church in Climbing Hill. The Rev. W.A. Resner officiated. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig under the direction of the Wood Funeral Home of Sloan.
Mrs. Alwayne Meyer, organist, accompanied the Congregational Hymns "Blest Be The Tie That Binds" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd."
Casket-bearers were Messrs. Tom Jacobson, Scot Jacobson, Jim Berends, Dennis Rush, Douglas D. Rush and Dale Rush.
Mrs. Smith, the former Hilda Boysen, was born April 22, 1896, the daughter of Broder Peter and Metta Funderman Boysen, near Schleswig. She married Earl Hargens in 1920. After his death, she married Wesley J. Smith on April 22, 1927, in Sioux City. The couple owned and operated Smith Grocery in Climbing Hill. Mr. Smith died November 19, 1937, in Climbing Hill. She served as postmaster at Climbing Hill from 1937 until retiring in 1965.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Climbing Hill Garden Club.
Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, March 18, 1987 at Matney's Colonial Manor in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Geraldine) Jacobson of Austin, Minnesota, and Mrs. E.J. (Shirley) Berends of Las Vegas, Nevada; three sons, Orlan Hargens of Lincoln, Nebraska, Warren Smith of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and Darrell Smith of Sioux City; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Erma Cooley of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one step granddaughter, three step great-grandsons, and three step great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one brother and by four sisters.
