Art H. Salsness, 76, 1032 S. Mulberry St., Sioux City businessman and civic leader, died Sunday, July 30, 1989, at his residence after a seven-month illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Morningside Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven
Dornbusch and the Rev. Debra Bengtson-Brue officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today with the family present from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Mr. Salsness was born Oct. 11, 1912, in Sioux City, the son of Bruce C. and Carrie (Johnson) Salsness. He attended Sioux City public schools and was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He married Lillian M. Rysta June 29, 1950, in Sioux City. He opened his own business, Art's Used Cars, in 1933, and 11 years later created Salsness Motor Co., which he continued to operate until he sold it 16 months ago. He was active in many civic endeavors.

Mr. Salsness was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church where he had served as president of the council and on the building committee.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bruce of Sioux City; two daughters, Judy Sherrill of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Gene (Lynda) McNear of South Sioux City; a brother, Ralph of Sioux City; four sisters, Blanche Molskow and Mabel Croot, both of Sioux City, and Ruth Sparks and Rayma Allshouse, both of Omaha; three grandsons, Tod, Troy and Terrence Sherrill and three granddaughters, Carrie and Jennifer Saisness and Kari McNear; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Carol Ann and Mary Lynn; two sisters, Clara Hall and Bernice Johndreau and a brother, John Salsness.

Pallbearers will be John Anderson, Terrence Sherrill, Tod Sherrill, Troy Sherrill, Charles Zook and E.C. "Ted" Thompson.

Memorials are being established in Mr. Salsness name.
