SMITHLAND, Iowa — Wilma A. Carlson, 82, of Smithland died Thursday, July 27, 1989, in a nursing home in Sergeant Bluff after an illness of several months.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in United Church of Christ in Oto with the Rev. Joe-d DowlingSoka officiating. Burial will be in West Fork Cemetery at Climbing Hill. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today in Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Carlson, the former Wilma A. Strong, was born Sept. 22, 1906, in Climbing Hill. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School and received a teaching certificate from Morningside College. She was employed at Martin's Department Store in Sioux City prior to her marriage to Robert E. Carlson April 20, 1929. He was a former Woodbury County supervisor. The couple farmed in the Climbing Hill, Smithland and Oto area. Mr. Carlson died March 29, 1974.
Mrs. Carlson was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ, the Church of Christ Mite Society and was currently serving on the church board. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Oto Federated Ladies Study Club, Oto Cemetery Society, Rodney Senior Citizens group, Daughters of the American Revolution, Society of Mayflower Descendants and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Connie Hoag of Sioux City; a grandson, Robert Hoag of Sioux City; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Milton Shumate of Moville, and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Van Langingham of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Wayne.
